On December 8th, 1963, Cliff Serwa and Doug Mervyn, to Kelowna locals with a big dream brought it to fruition with the opening of Big White Ski Resort to the public with one 5,589ft or 1,700 m T-bar lift. For the first year of operation, the road from the turnoff on Highway 33 to the ski area was only one lane; there was no uphill traffic was allowed after noon, and no downhill traffic from the resort was allowed before 1:00 p.m.
